As summer approaches you look through your closet. Are there a lot of statement pieces, but no basics? Or only basics and no statement pieces? Are there outfits, or only pieces, that are gorgeous but don’t work with anything else you own?
What can I have inside my closet that makes getting dressed easier? In other words, let me help you find the staples that a Jewish girl keeps in her closet.
That White Shirt
The elusive search for a white shirt is constant. In my work as a retail associate, I have people coming in and asking for a white tee shirt constantly. Finding one that is smooth, fully opaque, light, able to be layered… the list goes on and on. If you happen to have found the perfect white shirt, please tell me.
But having some sort of white shirt in your drawer is perfect for summer. Even if you need to layer a shell under it, white is such a versatile base color. I have had luck finding tznius white shirts at places like TJ Maxx and Burlington’s, so you don’t have to necessarily head straight to a Jewish store or website. Use it as a layer under a jacket of some sort, or under a jumper, or on it’s own.

Statement Pieces
To pair beautifully with a white shirt, a statement skirt is perfect. I recommend having both a statement top and a bottom. Maybe it’s a puffed sleeve blouse, or a skirt with a dramatic design. Pieces like these are there for days when you feel confident, or summery, or are heading somewhere special. They make an outfit feel memorable and intentional instantly.
Tees
A staple to keep in your closet is a collection of basic tees. Long or 3/4 sleeve shirts in neutral colors; gray, black, green, navy, or whatever else suits you. Shirts like these are extremely versatile. You can layer them for evening or fall wear, wear them on their own, and pair them with nearly any skirt. They are an incredible foundation for nearly any outfit.
Colored Skirt
Having at least one skirt that isn’t a plain black one is very exciting. Maybe it’s a light pink, an olive green, or a sky blue. Maybe it’s patterned. These are great to wear with a basic tee, because they elevate the outfit. When I look in my closet and choose a colored skirt, I smile automatically.
Here are just a few ideas of what to keep in your closet. The goal here is to have a collection of clothing that you can easily mix and match into a combination of gorgeous outfits. With a few basics, a few statement pieces, and a touch of color, you will constantly be wearing something lovely.
And above all, remember to stay Tznius, Timeless, and Tasteful!
